Sail Training

The Dar es Salaam Yacht Club offers sail training to both children and adults at all levels, ranging from beginner to advanced, in the form of group programs or private lessons.

The club owns a fleet of Optimists, Laser Pico's and Lasers. These can be rented by members during sailing lessons. Adults and children under fifteen years of age take separate lessons. There are usually five students in a group lesson, and group learn to sail programs run during the school term for a four week period.

There are two options available for learning to sail at DYC:

  • Option 1 - For children between the ages of 8-15 years comprised of four two-hour 1st step (level 1) beginer lessons. These lessons take place weekly on a Saturday morning with Optimists.
  • Option 2 - For children above fifteen years of age to adults comprising four two-hour 1st step (level 1) beginner lessons. These lessons take place weekly on a Friday or Sunday morning, 10-12pm. Laser Pico's are used during these lessons.
A member can sign up for these lessons by completing a booking form at the DYC Office. This ensures the member and / or child is placed on the waiting list. There is quite a long wait list for the children classes, therefore the sooner children are signed up, the better. Members on the waiting list will then be contacted before the start of the next four week course to confirm their availability.

If a member or child has already completed some sail training, they will need to contact the Sail Trainer to coordinate which adult or children lesson group they can join. The more advanced school children group lessons take place weekly from 3:30-5:30pm, on Tuesdays to Saturdays.

Private lessons are also available to members on their own boats, ie. Catamaran/Wayfarer/Laser 16 or Yacht. Private lessons run during the week, Tuesdays to Thursdays from 10-12 or 1-3pm. Private lessons also take place when there are no other group lessons, usually during school holidays or in the interim periods between 4-week group programs. All private lessons can be booked by contacting the Sail Trainer.

Sailing lessons take place on Tuesdays to Sundays. Three two-hour time slots are allocated each day, namely 10-12pm, 1-3pm, or 3:30-5:30pm. There are no sailing lessons on a Monday. Below is a 2017 lesson time table.

Each member undertaking sailing lessons at DYC is required to complete an Indemnity/booking form. The sail training charges are detailed on the second page of this form, noting that boat hire is a separate fee. This form can be downloaded here, and once complete, handed in at the DYC Office to be included on the waiting list.
