Diving

We warmly welcome anyone who would like to share in the joy of the underwater world of Dar es Salaam. Our members have a wide range of experience, from few dives to hundreds, from open water to advanced certifications and specialties.

The Dive Section is not a commercial operation but a club of DYC members with a common interest. The section is managed, and all dives are led, by volunteers. Dives are scheduled for Tuesday evenings, Thursday mornings, Friday afternoons, and Saturday and Sunday morning and afternoon. The dive trips always depend on the availability of a volunteer Dive Leader. Most dive sites within 15 kilometers of DYC and include reefs, walls, and wrecks. The Section has its own Dive Centre, its own compressor, and dive equipment for hire by its members. Most dives are boat dives from Nasrin, the dedicated dive boat.

Dive Section members meet every Thursday evening at 18:30 on the Quarter Deck to plan and sign up for dives for the coming week, to get to know each other, and to talk shop.  All DYC members interested in diving are encouraged to come to the Thursday meeting to meet other divers, get information about how to participate in our dive trips, and to talk with Dive Leaders before taking a first dive with the Club.

Recovery Fee

A one-time recovery fee of TZS 300,000 is required to receive access to weekly dive signup sheets. There are two ways in which a DYC member can participate in dive trips:

  1. By paying the one-time recovery fee and receiving access to all signup sheets.
  2. By paying a guest fee per dive trip. This guest fee is revised annually and is shown in the diver roster, which is filled out when preparing for any given dive trip and also includes gear rental costs. The Dive Leader will ensure guest divers are listed on the roster.

Prior to diving with the Section, indemnity and health forms (available from Dive Section Committee members) must be completed, and proof of dive certification and having dived at least once in the previous six months are required.

The forms are submitted to a Dive Section Committee officer, who will arrange for the Recovery fee to be deducted from your DYC account. All other fees are associated with how often you dive. All divers pay a share of the fuel for their dive trip and to fill the cylinder(s) used in that particular trip.

Equipment rental

The Section has BCD’s, regulators, cylinders and weights for hire at a nominal fee per item, and some other equipment that is free to use. All members are encouraged to buy their own equipment, suit, mask and fins at a minimum.

DYC members who chose to dive as Section Guests must be accompanied by a DYC member who has already paid the Recovery Fee. The forementioned guest fee includes all equipment hire costs, but medical, and liability forms are required, as well as proof of dive certification and proof of at least one dive within the previous six months is required.

The Dive Section Sub-Committee is elected from volunteers at the Section AGM each year. Core positions are; Chair/Diving Secretary (representative to the main DYC Committee), Secretary, Diving Officer, Dive Scheduler, Membership Officer, Boat Officer, Social Officer, and Equipment Officer. However there are also a number of other volunteers who all contribute to making diving in Dar es Salaam both safe and enjoyable.
